My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Aesculus californica (California Buckeye) does grow in Victoria garden, but outside the gated area. We have a few small shrubs which came up by themselves. The photos above I have taken along highway 36, but I have seen the plant as well native in the area behind our house.
This shrub with its beautiful big flowers drops it leaves in summer to cope with the summer heat. In fall the big fruits develop and make this plant interesting during fall and winter. It is very easy to propagate California Buckeye from seed. Nice to try out with children!
We don't water these shrubs at all, which makes them relatively drought tolerant, but I noticed that they all came up in the shade and in their natural habitat I have seen them mostly not too far from a stream. So I suppose it is not a plant for full sun in combination with no water at all.
