My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Vitis californica (California grape ) is a local Californian native. Grows mostly along streams. It is common along the banks of the Sacramento.
This vine doesn't need to climb, it is happy to cover other plants or behave like a ground cover. the branches can become 30 feet long.
It can withstand some periods in dry conditions, but prefers regular summer watering, however not too much. In my garden it came up in the woodland area, on a slope, next to a plant, that gets water from a water drip. This wild grape is a tough plant and often used as a rootstock for other wine grapes. The small grapes are edible but a bit sour and have big pits.
Be careful, this plant can become a weed in a regularly watered garden.
