My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Umbellularia californica (California Bay Laurel) is a local Californian native. Mostly growing near the coast or on higher elevations as an understory plant.
I noticed one near Dye Creek. It was growing on its own, in full sun, but very close to water. Taken into account where it grows you could say that it will grow well here in Redding, but does best with moderate water and afternoon shade. If given enough time it can grow into a large tree.
The leaves are just as aromatic as the Greek Bay laurel, but sharper in taste.
