My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Eschscholzia californica (California Poppy) is the official flower of California and a local native. It grows in grassy, open especially disturbed areas. You will frequently find them along the highways.
Well known are the orange flowers, but I have seen yellow onces near French Gulch. They are annuals, but reseed here freely. They love to wander around in my garden. One year here, another year somewhere else. Best to seed them in fall, when the rain season starts. You can also seed them in spring, but then they will often flower the next season.
Nowadays, there are many cultivars with different colors as seed available. I love the dark red and the orange - red varieties. This year I seeded 'Romantic Pink' between the orange and pink roses in the front yard. I am afraid you will have to wait till fall or next season to see them in flower.
