My personal notes
: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Cercis occidentalis (Western Redbud) is a local native, you will find everywhere around Redding. Most of the year one won't notice this shrub, but in March and April the big splash of bright pink flowers attracts everybody's attention. When noticed, lots of people stop  and would like to have this multi stemmed shrub in the garden.  If they go to most garden centers, they only would find its cousin the Cercis canadensis, which grows at the East Coast. Yes indeed, this is a nice low tree, but the local native certainly deserves a place in many Redding gardens.
Like many local natives it doesn't like to be overwatered and needs well drained soil, but being able to grow also next to seasonal streams it can handle a little summer water.
Not only the flowers are very attractive, but the big leaves have a unusual kidney formed shape. As an extra bonus the big seedpods gives this shrub lots of interest in winter.
