My personal notes
: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon Grape) is a California native. It grows as an understory plant in woodland areas in Northern California. Although growing in its native habitat in the shade of trees, it can handle sun and doesn't mind getting little water. It is another though plant, that doesn't need a lot of maintenance. That is why it is widely used in landscaping in and around Redding.
It is good cold hardy in winter, but sometimes the leaves turn red due to cold spells.
The big yellow flowers appear in early spring and in fall this shrub gets blue edible berries. If you don't like to eat the fruits , the birds will certainly appreciate them.
I just planted this native in the shade of trees along the parking lot. In this border with relatively poor soil and little water, it will be though. I hope it will survive.
