My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Carpenteria californica (Bush Anemone) is a Californian native. It is very rare and only found naturally in the foothills of eastern Fresno County at elevations from 1500 to 4000 feet. They are mostly found near creeks on north-facing slopes. In its native habitat in summer the leaves droop, wilt and turn yellow and the plant will look nearly dead till the fall rains start.
In England it is a well known garden plant and Ed Samson told me why.An english botanist found this species in the 18th century and brought it back to England. There is widely propagated and used in gardens. There it looks better adapted to the cooler, wetter climate.
Here in Redding, this plant is best planted in a shady spot and it will appreciate summer water in well drained soil. I have heard that it will survive the sun, but does best in afternoon shade.
I think this shrub is a must have plant because of its beautiful frail flowers and dark green leaves.
