Leaf margins describe the form of the edge (colored red). You only have to learn 8 types of margins.
Entire. An entire (also called smooth) leaf has a completely smooth edge. |
Scalloped. A scalloped leaf has a edge with broad rounded "hills". |
Serrated. A serrated leaf has saw teeth pointing toward the leaf tip. |
Double Serrated. A double serrated leaf has saw teeth pointing toward the leaf tip, and on those teeth are smaller saw teeth. |
Toothed. A toothed leaf has teeth pointing outwards. |
Spiny. A spiny leaf has spines pointing outwards. |
Pinnately lobed. A pinnately lobed leaf has deep indents forming "valleys" and "hills". The "valleys" point towards the rachis of the leaf (see dotted line). |
Palmately lobed. A palmately lobed leaf has deep indents forming "valleys" and "hills". The "valleys" point towards base of the leaf where the petiole (leaf stalk) starts (see dotted line). |
