Leaf Shape describes the shape of the leaf (yellow). You only have to learn 11 types of shape (there are hundreds) Different books may define shapes in different ways (sorry).
Elliptical.. An elliptical-shaped leaf is a "flattened" oval. The sides are NOT parallel to each other. |
Oval. An oval-shaped leaf has an oval shape. The widest part of the leaf is in the middle (red dotted line). |
Egg (or ovate). An egg-shaped leaf has a round base and has the widest point of the leaf below the middle of the leaf (see red dotted line). |
Linear. A linear-shaped leaf is very narrow, compared to its length. |
Oblong. An oblong-shaped leaf is relatively narrow, the sides are parallel to each other. This leaf is much longer than wide. |
Lance-shaped. A lancedshaped leaf is relatively long, pointed at the tip, round at the base, but the sides are NOT parallel. |
Round. A round-shaped leaf is more or less round. |
Triangular. A triangular-shaped leaf has the shape of a triangle. |
Cordate (or heart-shaped). A cordate shaped leaf is heart shaped. |
|
Shield (or peltate). A shield-shaped leaf has the petiole attached at the center of the leaf. It looks like a shield. |
