Shapes

  Leaf Shape describes the shape of the leaf (yellow). You only have to learn 11 types of shape (there are   hundreds) Different books may define shapes in different ways (sorry).


elliptical shaped

1: Elliptical.. An elliptical-shaped leaf is a "flattened" oval. The sides are NOT parallel to each other.

oval shaped

2: Oval. An oval-shaped leaf has an oval shape. The widest part of the leaf is in the middle (red dotted line).

egg shaped

3: Egg (or ovate). An egg-shaped leaf has a round base and has the widest point of the leaf below the middle of the leaf (see red dotted line).

linear shaped

4: Linear. A linear-shaped leaf is very narrow, compared to its length.

oblong shaped

5: Oblong. An oblong-shaped leaf is relatively narrow, the sides are parallel to each other. This leaf is much longer than wide.

lance shaped

6: Lance-shaped. A lancedshaped leaf is relatively long, pointed at the tip, round at the base, but the sides are NOT parallel.

round shaped

7: Round. A round-shaped leaf is more or less round.

triangular shaped

8: Triangular. A triangular-shaped leaf has the shape of a triangle.

cordate shaped

9: Cordate (or heart-shaped). A cordate shaped leaf is heart shaped.

kidney shaped

 


10: Kidney (or reniform).
A kidney-shaped leaf is shaped like a kidney.

shield shaped

11: Shield (or peltate). A shield-shaped leaf has the petiole attached at the center of the leaf. It looks like a shield.
